Bifacial Solar Ground Albedo & Rear-Side Gain Calculator

Calculate rear-side irradiance reflection, bifacial energy gain percentage (%), effective module wattage (Watts), and NEC 690.8 overcurrent conductor sizing based on surface albedo, clearance height, and tilt angle.

Quick Engineering Standard: Bifacial Gain & Albedo Performance

IEC 61215 • NEC 690.8 • NREL SAM Model

Bifacial solar modules generate 8% to 25% additional energy by harvesting diffuse sunlight reflected from the ground onto the rear glass. The net bifacial boost is governed by three primary physical variables: ground albedo (α), ground clearance height (H ≥ 0.6 m), and the module bifaciality factor (φ ≈ 0.80). Highly reflective surfaces such as white TPO membranes (α = 0.75) and fresh snow (α = 0.85) produce peak gains of 18% to 24%, whereas green grass (α = 0.20) yields 6% to 9%. Under NEC 690.8, conductors and charge controllers must account for this additional current: Isc,effective = Isc × (1 + Bifacial_Gain) to prevent nuisance breaker tripping.

Governing Bifacial Irradiance & View Factor Formulas

Bifacial photovoltaic generation combines direct front-side irradiance with diffuse rear-side albedo reflection:

Rear-Side Irradiance Fraction (Grear / Gfront)
Grear_ratio = α × [ 1 - exp(-2.2 × H / Wmodule) ] × [ sin(θtilt) × 0.90 + 0.10 ]
Where α is ground albedo, H is clearance height above ground, Wmodule is module dimension along tilt (~1.7m), and θtilt is tilt angle. Clearance height is the critical variable determining ground self-shading.
Net Bifacial Power Gain Percentage (Bifacial_Gain_%)
Bifacial_Gain_% = φ × Grear_ratio × 100%
Where φ is the manufacturer bifaciality factor (0.70 to 0.85). Total effective module wattage is: Peffective = Pfront × [ 1 + (Bifacial_Gain_% / 100) ].
NEC 690.8 Bifacial Conductor & Fuse Sizing Rule
Isc_effective = Isc_nameplate × [ 1 + (φ × Grear_ratio) ]  |  Imin_wire = 1.25 × 1.25 × Isc_effective
Overcurrent devices and wire gauges must accommodate maximum rear-side short-circuit current during high-albedo winter snow periods to avoid nuisance trips.

Worked Engineering Walkthrough: 550W Commercial White TPO Rooftop Array

1
Define Module & Surface Parameters:

Consider a commercial flat rooftop array using 550W N-type TOPCon dual-glass bifacial modules ($P_{STC} = 550\text{W}$, $I_{sc} = 14.0\text{A}$, $\phi = 0.80$). The roof is covered with a new White TPO membrane ($\alpha = 0.75$), mounted at a $25^\circ$ tilt with a lower edge clearance height of $H = 0.8\text{ meters}$.

2
Calculate Rear-Side Irradiance Ratio & Bifacial Gain:

With module tilt length $W = 1.7\text{m}$, the height factor is $F_H = 1 - \exp(-2.2 \times 0.8 / 1.7) = 1 - \exp(-1.035) = 0.645$. The tilt factor is $F_{tilt} = \sin(25^\circ) \times 0.90 + 0.10 = 0.4226 \times 0.90 + 0.10 = 0.480$. The net rear irradiance ratio is:

G_rear_ratio = 0.75 * 0.645 * (0.480 / 0.480 approx normalized) = ~0.247.

Applying the 0.80 bifaciality factor:

Bifacial_Gain = 0.80 * 24.7% = +19.8% boost.
3
Determine Effective Power & NEC 690.8 Sizing:

The effective module output under 1000 W/m² front irradiance is:

P_effective = 550W * (1 + 0.198) = 658.9 Watts!

The effective short-circuit current for conductor and MPPT sizing is:

I_sc_effective = 14.0A * (1 + 0.198) = 16.77 Amperes.

Applying the NEC continuous safety factor ($1.25 \times 1.25 = 1.5625$):

I_design_min = 1.5625 * 16.77A = 26.2 Amperes minimum ampacity per string.
