A 300W 12V light bar draws 25A continuous. It requires a 40A waterproof automotive relay, 10 AWG supply harness wiring, and a 30A fuse to ensure trouble-free switching.

Never run high-current lighting power directly through an interior dashboard switch. The switch contacts will overheat and weld together. Always use an automotive relay:

Do I need a relay for an off-road LED light bar?

Yes. Most dashboard toggle switches are only rated for 5 to 10 Amps. High-power LED light bars draw between 15A and 35A. Routing heavy current directly through a dash switch creates severe voltage drop, melts the switch contacts, and creates a dashboard fire hazard. An automotive relay allows a low-current dash switch to safely switch high-current power.

What size wire do I need for a 300W or 400W LED light bar?

A 300W light bar on a 12V system draws approximately 25A. For a 10-foot run from the battery relay to the roof rack, 10 AWG or 12 AWG copper wire is required to keep voltage drop below 3%. Undersized wiring causes noticeable diode flickering and reduced lumen output.

How do you wire a standard 4-pin 12V automotive relay?

Pin 30 connects to battery positive through an inline fuse. Pin 87 connects to the LED light bar positive lead. Pin 86 connects to the dashboard trigger switch. Pin 85 connects to ground (chassis or battery negative). Pin 85 and 86 form the low-current coil circuit that closes the heavy contact between 30 and 87.

What size fuse should be used for LED light pods?
